A new Blue and a new Blog

My teammate — and now fellow blogger — Tyler got his blue belt tonight. Congrats!

Fundamentals Class, gi

Lots of folks on the mat tonight. A barn-burner of a class, too. (Also, I think the new auxiliary heater to blame: I think it’s pulling all the moisture out of the air, so the air is dry and hot. My hair is frizzy during shrimps. Hard to breathe, too.)

Warmup, including down-the-mat drills. Then started rolling. With Andrew, Eamon, Buddy. Towards the end of the round, I was stuck under Buddy’s mount, but was too busy watching Justin circling Tyler & Jon and glancing up at Tim for the signal to really do much.

The belt they had is too small, so after Justin tied it on, there were only little nubs sticking out, lol. πŸ˜›

More rolling. Ed, Tyler, Rob(?), Justin, Tim. That finished out the Fundamentals Class.

While rolling with Justin, Ray and Tim were next to us and rolled in to us at some point. Tim grabbed Justin’s belt, Ray turned and pounced on him; Justin still had my arm trapped. There was a brief scuffle of Justin defending against multiple attackers. (Oddly enough, it did not look like dancing.)

Rolling notes: I was moving, but not doing much; no pressure down. So I was diving in to things that they had waiting because I was doing nothing to distract them first. Realized later, too, that I wasn’t getting my breath well; I still think it’s the new heater. * Made a Tactical Error against Buddy when he had my back (ever since someone [that is, me] told him what I was doing to defend his attacks, he’s been working on ways to defeat it), which he gleefully seized and finished. Made the same mistake against Tim later, but immediately recognized it got my hands back in position.

Drilling: a sweep from half guard. (The opposite of how we normally do Mondays; usually it’s drilling first in the Fundamentals Class and then massive rolling later.) Worked with Ed. Drilling for the rest of class.

Just what I needed

Long, slow, ugh day. Overcaffeinated and oversugared. My rib/bruise/thingy was giving me extra grief today. Cold and rainy, too. I considered not going to class tonight, though never in a very serious way. I knew I wouldn’t have a great night, but there really wasn’t enough to keep me from going.

(I want some video game therapy, though, so this is gonna be quick πŸ˜‰ )

Fundamentals Class, BJJ

Rolling to warmup. With Buddy. Yeah, this might not have been the best plan. I could already tell that I was completely and totally and 100% off.

Then drilling from half-guard. Worked with Aubrey.

Tim divided us up into three groups at first. Aubrey and I were one group. One group of three, another group of two. The group of three went round robin, while the pairs just rolled. Eventually he moved the other pair over and made one big group of five for round robin, while Aubrey and I still rolled together. We ended up rolling the entire class, so 45 minutes straight. I was just going nice and easy. At first I was a little annoyed that I didn’t get to play with the boys, but then I remembered how I’d felt coming in to class (and how I still felt, if I’d think about it) and that my ribs were still bothering me. So what I ended up doing was exactly what I needed to do tonight. I got nice and loose by the end of class and didn’t have to worry about exacerbating an injury. In the end, best thing for me, and I left happy.

Until I got outside and realized it was snowing…

Back on the mats again

Man, it was so hard to hold myself off the mats at the end of last week! Thankfully I had lots of things that kept me busy. I nearly caved on Saturday, but then my mom called to go shopping. Whew. So by today, I was raring to go.

November Homework

Pre-class food:

  • banana
  • protein shake
  • water

Class notes:

  • Well, winded quickly, but that’s more likely from sitting on my bum all week and eating crap for a whole week. Muscles did not feel tired — no particular set of muscles felt depleted at all.

Fun thing from a week off: we’ve submitted several maintenance requests at work for my corner of the office. First was an invasion of stinkbugs, then was that it was so ridiculously cold, and finally that the wind was so loud through the windows. The guys joked and called it my kazoo. !!!

Anyway, the maintenance guy came about the wind on Thursday, and he said he would check it out on a lift outside. And he found the one problem that has caused all the others — the top window was open. These windows are not meant to open, but the pane here had slid quite a bit to one side, leaving a quarter-inch gap the whole way up. This is of course how the bugs got in, the heat got out, and the wind got in.

The maintenance guys managed to slide the pane back in place and caulked it, so hopefully it stays there now. My corner has been rather snug since they fixed it, too.

My friend Aubrey, who I met when she was our summer IT intern at work, asked if she could come to BJJ this week because all her friends are out of town on Thanksgiving break and because she is always up for trying something new. I think every time I talk to her, she’s doing something different. Aubrey is a lot taller than me and otherwise bigger — somehow I can see it this time — so I couldn’t loan her a gi for class.

Fundamentals Class, BJJ

The college kids are pretty much gone this week because they’re off for Thanksgiving. Small class — me, Aubrey, and one other blue belt, with Andrew teaching.

Short warmup, though I was already winded, then on to drilling. Side control escape to single leg. Later added finishing the single. Then the swinging leg escape to head-and-arm control. (Andrew actually showed a bridging version, then Justin showed the swinging version. I’ve always done the swinging, so that’s what I did.)

Worked with Aubrey. She seemed to be having fun.

More guys showed up. Class started with drilling. A half-guard escape that Tim called “The Superman.” It didn’t make sense, though, until Justin showed it without anyone on him, and then it looks rather like a Superman punch. Aha!

Drilled with Aubrey again. The funny things with the sweep is that you can easily land in half-guard on top, and so your partner can then do a rep. And with the way you’re oriented, you’re both sweeping in the same direction on the mats. So we started in one corner of the mats, did a set of reps down the side of the mat until we were nearly on top of the next pair; then we switched sides and did a set of reps down the side of the mat back down to where we started. Quite amusing.

Paired up for rolling. Aubrey wanted to try, so Tim let us work together. Just went slow and tried to get her in positions from drilling (though I kept sliding to mount. Lol, automatic response.). Got her in side control and she picked the swinging leg escape, landing in the head-and-arm control. Tim stepped in to show her how to switch to the side, take the back, and RNC. So let her drill that a few times, then worked in my own escape. Most of our roll was her drilling new stuff, though.

Then I was paired with Ed and Aubrey with Buddy. He apparently just kept sweeping her, which amused her. Super duper winded super fast with Ed. Then one more roll with Buddy, which was fun. Lol, I might not be able to breathe, but the intensity level popped right back up there (so at least I didn’t lose everything in a week!). Aubrey sat that one out to just watch everyone. Afterwards she commented that now she understands why I love doing this so much. πŸ™‚

And as soon as she got home, she posted on my Facebook Wall asking about buying a gi. And competing. Lol, I think she done got bit by the BJJ bug. πŸ˜‰

We’ll only have class tomorrow and Wednesday nights this week because of the holiday. So I’ll go all 3 nights and get in my share of beatings, then rest up over the long weekend.

NaNoWriMo Update

Word Count: 35,394 / 50,000

I caught up last week after getting behind during the tournament, but tonight I haven’t been able to get back in the post-class swing and have take way too long to get things going. But that word count still puts me ahead for today — and there will be Thursday and Friday to catch up, as well.

Now, if I could just figure out how this thing is going to end…

Tuesday, November 8, 2011

Er, I think someone said something about taking Tuesdays off… *whistling* Oh, right, that might have been me but I figured since I was taking mornings off this week and Thursday & Friday then I should train tonight because… er… because… well, because I’m not too bright sometimes. (Most times.)

November Homework

Pre-class food & drink:

  • Avocado
  • 10oz water
  • I forgot to pack my protein shake (out of the habit), and my banana was rotten clean through, though it had looked fine from the outside.

Class notes:

  • Felt heavy and tired all class. My brain started going during drilling: couldn’t even remember what side I had just done a rep on. Felt so slow during rolling.
  • But, I talked to a couple other guys, and they also thought the room was uncomfortably warm tonight (there had been an earlier, er, discussion between our group and the other about the thermostat, and I think they cranked it up after that), and they were also exhausted even during drilling. So, tonight, so far, appears to be an anomaly.

Warmup. Foot still twitching on shots.

(Tim brought his kids tonight, and they were play jiu-jitsu around on one corner of the mat during the warmup. At one point his daughter got a triangle on her big brother, and Tim said, “Work that triangle! You’re gonna need to know it when you’re older!” The gym dissolved into laughter.)

Then drilling the Plan B again from last night. Then a half guard sweep. Rolling towards the end. Bobby and Ed.

Open Mat

Rolled with Ed. Very glad I got a lot of work tonight with small squirmy people. They find space where I didn’t realize I had any!

Word Count: 13,928 / 50,000

That’s from last night, but is still ahead of today’s goal. I tried to write during Monday Night Football, and that just didn’t work. My characters ended up mired down in an awful scene where nothing happened; thankfully one of them finally figured out how to get out.

Big dude is BIG

November Homework

Pre-class food & drink:

  • Avocado (289cal, 15carb, 27fat, 3protein)
  • banana (109cal, 28carb, 1fat, 1protein)
  • protein shake (118 cal, 1carb, 1 fat, 26protein)
  • totals: 515cal, 44carb, 28fat, 31protein
  • 10oz water

Class notes:

  • Some tiredness in hips and quads during warmup, mostly noticed during alligators (but then I have always had a problem getting things engaged properly and especially during alliagors). Still some lingering soreness from Friday. (!!) But overall, seemed to feel good. Kept moving the whole time. Could have gone longer.

I’m taking mornings off this week because of the tournament. Trying not to get too beat up before going to get beat up, lol.

A new guy came in tonight with Eamon. Dude is 285lbs and used to play football. Dude is BIG. (He had been in once before a while ago, apparently, but I don’t remember him, so must have been a night when I wasn’t there.) Big dude is also scary fast. O. M. G.

Notes might be short during November because of NaNoWriMo.

Fundamentals Class, BJJ

Warmup. Tim timed every part. Normal circle stuff, then on the wall for more. Tim pointed out where my back foot is twitching first before I shoot. I’ve probably been doing that since I started. Wow. (Think it’s a holdover from TKD, where you usually rotate your planted foot. Lovely. Deep-rooted idiosyncrasy to correct.)

Partnered up for armbars from guard. With Eamon. Then drilled sweeping from there and finishing.

Rolling. With Eamon.

Rolling to start. Eamon again and Buddy. Drilling. Plan B sweep. Worked with Brandon and Ed. Rolling again. Ed and Brandon.

Word count: 13,101 / 50,000

That total is from last night, and it’s almost up to tomorrow’s goal. One of the stories took off, and I’ve been been hitting ~2500 words/day on it (and it started on a day in which I already had 1,000 words).
