Big dude is BIG

November Homework

Pre-class food & drink:

  • Avocado (289cal, 15carb, 27fat, 3protein)
  • banana (109cal, 28carb, 1fat, 1protein)
  • protein shake (118 cal, 1carb, 1 fat, 26protein)
  • totals: 515cal, 44carb, 28fat, 31protein
  • 10oz water

Class notes:

  • Some tiredness in hips and quads during warmup, mostly noticed during alligators (but then I have always had a problem getting things engaged properly and especially during alliagors). Still some lingering soreness from Friday. (!!) But overall, seemed to feel good. Kept moving the whole time. Could have gone longer.

I’m taking mornings off this week because of the tournament. Trying not to get too beat up before going to get beat up, lol.

A new guy came in tonight with Eamon. Dude is 285lbs and used to play football. Dude is BIG. (He had been in once before a while ago, apparently, but I don’t remember him, so must have been a night when I wasn’t there.) Big dude is also scary fast. O. M. G.

Notes might be short during November because of NaNoWriMo.

Fundamentals Class, BJJ

Warmup. Tim timed every part. Normal circle stuff, then on the wall for more. Tim pointed out where my back foot is twitching first before I shoot. I’ve probably been doing that since I started. Wow. (Think it’s a holdover from TKD, where you usually rotate your planted foot. Lovely. Deep-rooted idiosyncrasy to correct.)

Partnered up for armbars from guard. With Eamon. Then drilled sweeping from there and finishing.

Rolling. With Eamon.

Rolling to start. Eamon again and Buddy. Drilling. Plan B sweep. Worked with Brandon and Ed. Rolling again. Ed and Brandon.

Word count: 13,101 / 50,000

That total is from last night, and it’s almost up to tomorrow’s goal. One of the stories took off, and I’ve been been hitting ~2500 words/day on it (and it started on a day in which I already had 1,000 words).

Haha sounds like one of the guys at my gym. How’d it go rolling with him? My big football dude destroys everyone on his level. You have to be either much, much better than him (in which case your awesome technique can counter his raw strength) or you have to be a beginner, like me, in which case he just lets you play and is very careful. Although even his “careful” resulted in me constantly flying through the air as a result of sweeps and getting kicked or kneed in the face a few times. He’s really nice, just very huge and intense.

I didn’t roll with him, but the guys that did looked like they were getting tossed around like rag dolls. (I wanted to point out that this looked like me rolling with most of them, but I refrained.)

Now that I think about it, we actually have had another guy his size before, a former professional football player. One of his first days rolling, he was going with Nick, a 200lb+ purple belt. Nick caught him in a triangle, and the instructors tried to explain to this guy how to get out. The guy didn’t understand, so he reached back, grabbed Nick’s knees on either side, and lifted him straight up, over his head, and off his arm, and then set him gently to the side. Everyone’s mouths just hung open.

    That’s hilarious. Wow.
